Reply of Grand Ayatollah Saafi to the question regarding a congregational prayer lead by a non-spiritual leader

To the Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpayegani
Salam alaikum
Recently in some of the masjids congregational prayers are being lead by non-spiritual leader (non - roohanis) and fellow Muslims are also praying behind them. What is the ruling of such cases according to the jurisprudence?

In the name of Allah, the most beneficent and the most compassionate.
Alaikum Al- Salam Wa Rahmatullah
In general, it is permissible that a non-spiritual leader can lead a congregational prayer. Even a spiritual leader and mujtahid can follow a non-spiritual leader and non-mujtahid in congregational prayers. The conditions of leading a congregational prayer are faith in Allah and justice. And if the congregational prayer is for men or for mix gathering then apart from those two conditions, masculinity is also one of the conditions.

The Secret Birth of Hadhrat Mahdi (a.s.)

Shaikh Mufid, a distinguished Shia scholar, also wrote in al-Irshad: "When Imam Hasan al-'Askari (as), passed away, the caliph of that time, pursued his son because the Imamiyyah shia’s belief was famous and was spread about that the Shias were awaiting His Eminence."

Mu'tadid, one of the tyrant Abbasid caliphs who ruled from 279 to 289 A.H., decided all at once to destroy the entire family of Imam al-Askari (as) when he heard that more than twenty years had passed since the birth of the son of Imam Hasan al-Askari (as), and that he was still living in spite of the attempts of the preceding caliph to kill him. One of Mu'tadid's officers said: "Mu'tadid has ordered me and two other persons, each of us to mount a horse and to proceed to Samarra in full speed without even stopping for prayer. He gave us the address of Imam al-Askari (as) and instructed us to enter his house without his permission and to bring him the head of whoever we find there." As a matter of fact, they were unaware that the same power which had protected the Imam from the former caliphs would give him protection from his evil, because:

"Allah disdains (nothing) save that He shall perfect His light, however much the disbelievers are averse" (IX 32).

The Reappearance of the Great Reformer of the world – A fundamental religious belief

The belief that at the end of the time a universal reformer will arise and provide success to mankind and save people from their afflictions and calamities, is one of the most ancient and fundamental beliefs, that all the heavenly religious have given glad tidings of this and all the history of mankind has recorded it as a sanctified and respectful belief.
The man who has witnessed the worst of the disasters, battles and turmoil caused by the inhuman people and surrounded the whole mankind. The man who is trampled upon by tyrants and deprived by greedy and selfish elements from the blessings that should have been available to all in the world. Such a man is in anticipation of a reformer who would transform the flow of history and establish the Kingdom of truth. There is no doubt that he shall be that same Mahdi of the Progeny of Muhammad. The world shall be graced by his knowledge, justice, planning and good diplomacy. The Prophet of Islam (as), who never spoke without revelation, and his Infallible Successors who had always been associated with piety and god fearingness have explained about that great reformer, that is the Qaim of the Progeny of Muhammad (as). Here it would be appropriate that we mention some examples of the advent of the universal reformer and his justice and truth.
